The Ranch at Stoney Creek has evolved over the last 200 years, from a mining camp in the 1800s to a lodge built on the route of a stagecoach trail to a cattle ranch to the making of wine in the 1960s.

Named after an old gold-mining camp, Fair Play is located in rolling hills at an altitude of 2,000 to 3,000 feet (600 to 900 meters), which, averaged, makes it the highest elevation of any California AVA. Low rainfall and loam soils favor Zinfandel, followed by Rhne and Italian varietals.
